Off to a Good Start
We are two weeks into the school year and things are rolling along just great! Students are just completing their first project -- Constructing saw horses. We are learning about safe operation of power tools and hand tools. Students will be constructing a safety poster, powerpoint, or pamphlet which is due Sept 19th. All the studnets are looking forward to receiving their first Building Bucks check as well.
Building Bucks Program:
The Building Bucks program is designed to give
the students experience in managing money, paying bills, and setting
up a budget. The students receive a weekly paycheck, make deposits,
and maintain a check register. In the second quarter of the year the
students picked up a car payment. This week they will be researching
apartments and begin paying a month rent payment as well as utilities.
Fridays are exciting for the students because they each take a turn
reaching into a bag and pulling out a note. Each note is different and
the students will either receive money or have to pay money. They notes
are designed to replicate real life situations, i.e. "had to replace
the water pump in your car pay $150.00" or "won on a scratch
off lottery ticket collect $100.00". The purpose of the program
is to help the students live within a budget and be able to save money
as well. At the end of the year the students will use all the money
they have saved at an auction bidding on donated items such as tools
and gift cards.
